What: This is the Advanced Beekeeper Class (Journeyman’s Course) hosted by Clemson Extension and Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored by Mid-State Beekeepers Association.
Q: When will the course be held? A: The course is scheduled for
- Saturday September 22, 2018 - 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
- Saturday October 20, 2018 - 8:30 am to 5:00pm
Q: To what level of beekeeper is the course directed?
A: This is the Advanced course typically taken by beekeepers wishing to prepare for SCBA Journeyman Certification. Attendees should have been keeping bees for at least two years.
Q: Do I have to have my Certified Certificate to attend?
A: No, but you should be aware that the course will cover material intended for beekeepers that are knowledgeable of Certified level material and are looking for more advanced information. The attendee should be well versed in the Certified level material as instructors will not be re-covering Certified level material.
Q: Where will the course be held?
A: The course will be held at the Lexington County Auxiliary Building located at 605 West Main St., Lexington, SC. Click here for a map.
Q: What is the cost of the course?
A: The cost of the two days of instruction is $50. Current membership in Mid-State Beekeepers Association is required to register. You may join MSBA when you register.
Q: Is there a textbook?
A: Yes, the Hive and the Honey Bee (2015 edition) is the text book. It is significantly different than other editions and will be used for reading assignments and review. It is recommended you have access to this book when taking the class. The book is available at a discount when you register.
Update: Book Availability - Our books have arrived and will be available at our September monthly meeting to those who have registered for the class and purchased books.
Q: Will the Journeyman test be offered?
A: Yes, the Journeyman testing will follow the course on a separate date: Saturday, November 10th, 2018 at the same location. The South Carolina Beekeepers Association awards Certificates upon completion of the various levels of the Master Beekeeping Program. There will be a course review on that date followed by both the written and practical test. The cost of the testing is $25 payable to the South Carolina Beekeepers Association. They will have online registration for the test available prior to the test date. To read more about Journeyman requirements visit the SCBA web site here. For confirmation you are eligible you may email Susan Jones, SCBA MBP Director at: [email protected]
Q: Why should I register early? A: We hope to send out an email to the registered attendees to offer some additional guidance prior to the class. Topics to be covered, links to getting started on your Journeyman public service documentation, and a reading list. Just like being a good beekeeper, being proactive pays dividends.
Q: What is the last possible day I can register? A: Registration will remain open until we run out of seating room. It's a large facility and we hope to do as many as wish to attend.
Q: Can I register at the door? A: No, we will not be registering at the door. We do not accept cash, checks, or cards so all registration is online.
Q: Where can I register for the course?
A: Registration is closed.
